About Ivan Barry
Candidate for Santa Fe County Assessor
My name is Ivan Barry, and I am running for Santa Fe County Assessor. I am a Santa Fe native and currently serve as the Chief Deputy Assessor for the Santa Fe County Assessor’s Office, where I have worked closely alongside current Assessor Isaiah F. Romero. Together, we have focused on maintaining a stable, and professional office that serves the public with fairness and consistency. I bring more than 20 years of experience in local government and a deep understanding of the day-to-day operations of the Assessor’s Office.
My background includes leadership in management, customer service, marketing, and community outreach. I am deeply committed to education—both within the profession and in the community—and I teach Property Tax and Appraisal courses through the New Mexico EDGE program. I believe strongly in fostering creativity, collaboration, and a positive workplace culture while ensuring continuity in policies and practices that taxpayers rely on.
Under consistent leadership in the Assessor’s Office, property valuations have increased over the years while property tax rates have remained stable—and in many cases, have actually decreased. This consistency has helped provide predictability for taxpayers and stability for local government services.
Throughout my time in the office, we have maintained a strong and positive working relationship with the State of New Mexico Property Tax Division, which conducts our annual evaluations. I have also been directly involved in the Assessor’s Office receiving numerous awards dating back to 2017, including the Certificate of Excellence in Assessment Administration from the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). Santa Fe County remains the only county in New Mexico to hold this certification and is one of just 62 jurisdictions in the United States to receive this prestigious recognition.
I am a New Mexico Certified Appraiser and hold multiple certifications through the New Mexico EDGE program. I have had the honor of serving as a former IAAO Representative and am currently a member of the IAAO Professional Recruitment Task Force. I am also an active member of the New Mexico Counties Assessors’ Affiliate and currently serve as the Chair of the Veterans Committee.
Outside of work, I stay actively involved in the community by volunteering as a coach for youth flag football and basketball. I also enjoy spending time with my wife and our three boys, and hiking in the Santa Fe wilderness.
I respectfully ask for your vote if you are looking for an experienced leader who will provide stability, continuity, and integrity in the Assessor’s Office, while standing firmly for fairness and equity in property valuation.
